Cudas swim in big meet

A report on last week's Delta Barracuda swim team was submitted by Gary Gibson.

The swim team competed in two swim competitions last week. The first was the 2016 Grand Junction Invitational hosted by Maverick Aquatics. Over 450 swimmers from Colorado and surrounding states joined together for one of the largest swim meets held on the Western Slope.

Delta's Barracudas took seven athletes to test their skills against some of the finiest swimmers around. Those swimmers included Jillian Carlson, Isaac Gibson, Jaylena Gibson, Ashton Jones, Olivia McCracken, Landre Whelan and Doyle Young.

Carlson placed in the top 16 in eight of her events, including second places in both the girls 11-12 100 and 200 meter breaststroke races.

Young, competing in the 11-12 boys 100 meter butterfly, was also a top-16 placer for the Barracudas.

A list of Delta swimmers, and their events, include Jaylena Gibson (11-12 girls) - 100 meter backstroke, 50 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 50 meter freestyle, 50 meter butterfly, 100 meter freestyle and 50 meter breaststroke; Jillian Carlson (11-12 girls) - 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 50 meter breaststroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 400 meter freestyle, 50 meter butterfly, 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter IM; Olivia McCrackin (15 and over girls) - 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 50 meter freestyle, 100 meter butterfly, 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter IM.

Also in the 15 and over girls division, Landre Whelan competed in the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 100 meter butterfly, 400 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter breaststroke and 200 meter IM.

Young's 11-12 boys division events included the 100 meter breaststroke, 50 meter freestyle and 100 meter butterfly.

In the boys 15 and over competition, Gibson participated in the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 50 meter freestyle, 400 meter freestyle, 100 meter freestyle and the 1500 meter freestyle.

Ashton Jones (15 and over boys) competed in the 200 meter freestyle, 100 meter backstroke, 100 meter breaststroke, 50 meter freestyle and the 400 meter freestyle.
