Darold L. Kearns died Thursday, May 26, 2016, at Horizons Care Center in Eckert. He was 87.
A memorial service will be held July 16 on Grand Mesa.
Mr. Kearns was born in Trenton, Neb., April 24, 1929, to Elmer and Martha (Marquardt) Kearns. He grew up in the Cedaredge and Delta area, graduating from Delta High School in 1948.
When he was 24 years old he moved to Phoenix, Ariz., to work in the cotton industry.
He married Phyllis Engman Feb. 24, 1956. They moved to Delta in 1958.
Mr. Kearns was a foreman in the Broughtons' orchards in Dominguez Canyon for many years.
He enjoyed wrestling while in school, tinkering, and fishing and camping in western Colorado.
As a young boy he contracted polio and worked very hard to overcome its effects. He encouraged other children dealing with the same difficulty.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Kearns of Delta; his daughters, Darlene Hickson of Illinois, Gail Dicamillo and Starla Hansen, both of Delta; a brother, Benny Kearns of Chula Vista, Calif.; a sister, Bernadine Wold of Hillsboro, Ore.; eight grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild on the way.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Sabin Kearns; and a daughter, Dianna Richards.
