David E. Smith
David Ewell Smith was born in Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 21, 1937. He passed away at Horizons Care Center in Eckert, Colo., just 10 days prior to his 80th birthday.
David was the youngest child of Ewell and Irene Smith. He attended school in Phoenix and married Joyce Jacoby in 1956. This marriage ended in divorce with no children.
David served in the United States Air Force from 1956 through 1959. He then worked for Motorola in Scottsdale, Ariz. There he spent five years in the development of side-looking airborne radar and support systems, and 7 1⁄2 years in microwaves and antennas for military and NASA.
In the early 1970s, David moved to Peach Valley in Delta County, Colo. He married Ruth Goldsworthy in 1977 and they made their home in Hotchkiss, Colo. Together Ruth and David added three children to her seven from a previous marriage. David adopted Paul, the youngest of his stepchildren.
David was skilled in radio and electronics and all things mechanical. He worked for Mt. Sopris Instrument Co. in Delta, then began working as an Electrician/Mechanic at the various coal mines in the area, and retired in 2000. David's hobbies included an interest in politics and flipping salvage vehicles. He also spent a lot of time gardening with his wife. David had been a member of First Baptist Church in Hotchkiss, and also attended Mountain View Bible Church in Lazear.
David was preceded in death by his parents; siblings; Modene and Buster; stepchildren.Amy, Matt and Joyce; son, Paul; children-in-law, Daryln, John, and Roy; and one grandson, Charlie.
David is survived by his wife, Ruth; children: David V. (Katie) Smith, Steven V. Smith (Heather Clark), and Kate (Tim) McDaniel, all of Hotchkiss, Colo.; stepchildren Charles Townsend of Grand Junction, Colo., Laurie Brewer of Hotchkiss, Colo., and Robin Miller of Lakewood, Colo.; 21 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
No services are planned.
