DCLA awards $6,000 to graduates

The Delta County Livestock Association congratulates all high school graduates and wishes them the very best on all their future endeavors. Special congratulations go to the livestock association's 2017 scholarship recipients.

This year, the association received five scholarship applications from very deserving seniors and each of these students will be receiving a 2017 scholarship.

Aleexea Wilson, Cedaredge High School, received the DCLA Bob Ensley Memorial Scholarship for $2,000. The Bob Ensley Memorial Scholarship is intended for students with any background who are planning to pursue an agriculture related education. Wilson will be attending Colorado State University and pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine.

Tory Dan Wilson Jr., also of Cedaredge, and Joyclie Webb of Delta are each receiving $1,000 DCLA Denise Kossler Memorial Scholarships. The Denise Kossler Memorial Scholarship is intended for students who come from an agricultural background and may be pursuing a nonagricultural background.

Wilson plans to study electrical engineering at Colorado School of Mines, and Webb will attend the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs to earn a degree as an English teacher.

DCLA is also giving out two educational opportunity grants in the amount of $1,000 each. The recipients of these are Elijah Etter of Paonia and Brendon Klaseen of Cedaredge. Etter is a graduate of the Vision Charter Academy and is planning to pursue a four-year degree and career in agriculture. Klaseen will attend either Western Colorado Community College as a student in their sustainable agricultural program or Texas Christian University in an intensive ranch management program.

Each year the Delta County Livestock Association rewards individuals who are coming from an agricultural background or are planning to go into an agricultural field of study. These scholarships are funded by donations as well as the proceeds from the Delta County Livestock Association barbecue at the Delta County Fair. Additionally, we also hold silent and live auctions at our annual banquet and all proceeds benefit the scholarship fund. Thank you to all DCLA members and donors for making it possible to help these deserving students as they pursue their future dreams.
