Deck, Schwieterman win district spelling bee

Paonia Junior High School eighth-grade student Grace Deck is the winner of the annual district spelling bee, held Feb. 11 at Paonia Junior-Senior High School.

Deck advances to the 76th annual Colorado State Spelling Bee, which will be held March 12 in Denver. The state winner advances to the March 19 Scripps National Spelling Bee at the University of South Dakota.

Brian Hoerr from Cedaredge Middle School was runner-up, and eighth-grade students Katya Schwieterman and Evan White, both from PJHS, placed third and fourth respectively. Schwieterman also won the written portion of the bee.

Qualifiers

Cedaredge Middle School -- Ellison Black, Paden Conner, Sean Dale, Joshua Deal, Alayna Edwards, Brian Hoerr, Richard Imhoff and Katelin Seale.

Hotchkiss K-8 School -- Joseph Burris, Micah Cooper-Sponseller, Lauryn Kiefer, Ivy Kirk, Rebeka Scheiderer and Ian Van Horn.

Paonia Junior High School -- Sophia Cox, Grace Deck, Nicole Jefferis, Sam Mock, Audra Niermann, Katya Schwieterman, Kai Sorensen, Jalyn Walker and Evan White.

Delta Middle School -- Audrey Herren, Gauge Lockhart, Tenaya Pfifer, Kaitlyn Sharpe, Kendyll Siettmann, Ashley Trevino and Jason Violett.
