Delta High School's volleyball team ventured to New Castle last weekend for a four-game challenge against some stiff competition. The plan for Delta coach Beth Nelson was to earn a few RPI points for seeding purposes in the coming regional playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, a 3-1 outing did not serve the purpose extra matches might have provided.
Delta opened the weekend with a loss to Palisade, 25-10 and 25-15, on Friday. A second contest with Alamosa resulted in another two-set loss, 25-15 and 25-21.
Saturday morning's play produced some much needed relief with a 2-1 win over Battle Mountain, 25-9, 18-25 and 25-10. The Panthers ended their weekend play with a 3-0 loss to Glenwood Springs, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-17.
The Panthers held onto second place in the 3A WSL with an 8-1 league record and 15-8 overall.
Delta's RPI rating took a hit with the Panthers entering the 2017 playoffs sitting in 29th place.
Regional pairings were released late Monday and Delta will travel to Gilcrest to play in Region 8, hosted by Valley High School. The Panthers will face No. 8 Valley on Friday at 3:30 p.m. and take on No. 17 Denver Science & Tech Stapleton at 5:30 in pool play. Valley and DSST play at 7:30 p.m.
Winners from each region advance to state tournament play Nov. 10-11.
Cedaredge High School is rated 28th in RPI rankings and is off to Bennett to play in Region 9. The Bruins take on No. 9 Bennett on Saturday at 1 p.m. and play Eagle Ridge Academy (No. 16) at 2:45 p.m. the same day. Bennett and Eagle Ridge play at 4:30.
