Delta Elks to help keep the flags flying

The Delta Elks Lodge has answered the plea for assistance with the Flags for Delta program
Boy Scout Troops 475, 481 and 485 take turns posting flags along Main Street and Highway 92 for major holidays beginning with Mother's Day in May and ending with Veterans Day in November. This community tradition dates back to 1961. In the past, this display of colors has been organized by business leaders, with the scout troops providing manpower. The business leaders handled the administrative aspects of sending out solitication letters, tracking payments, maintaining the post office box and making sure the tags are current on the flag trailer.
Joel Butzin, Troop 475, said the number of business administrators has dwindled over the years, until two or three years ago the last individual dropped out and the scoutmasters found themselves in charge of administering the BSA Flags for Delta program.
When a mass mailing failed to generate much financial support from the business community, the scoutmasters decided it was time to put together a team to focus solely on administrative tasks, including fundraising.
The Delta Elks Lodge agreed to take on that responsibility. Duncan Wurm chairs the Delta Flag Committee, with assistance from three other Elks.
Wurm said the standalone committee will be launching another letter campaign, appealing to local businesses for support. In addition, he said, they plan to set aside a day where the Boy Scouts can call on businesses in person.
"We may also end up doing some local fundraising, like a spaghetti dinner, in the future," Wurm said.
"We want to keep the program in front of the community," he said.
Kurt Roithmayr, assistant scoutmaster of Troop 485, said, "Everybody in the community draws from the posting of the flags," he said, "and we want the community to understand where we're at with this."
