Delta High School's girls completed their basketball campaign for the 2015-16 season with a 4A WSL District loss to Durango last Thursday night at Grand Junction Central High School. The 48-23 loss to the Demons left a young Delta team with a 9-12 overall mark and 5-9 in league play.
The Panthers were seeded seventh in this year's tournament and Durango second with its 13-6 overall record.
Montrose came into the 4A WSL tournament as the No. 1 seed because of its play in the Southwestern League, where it finished second behind Fruita Monument with a 16-6 overall record and 7-1 in league play.
Montrose lost the title game to this year's 4A WSL titlest, Palisade, which has a record of 21-2 overall and 14-0 in league play. The Bulldogs needed an overtime period to score a 35-33 victory.
Durango defeated Rifle, the 4A WSL second-place team (17-6 and 12-2), by a score of 40-32 to claim third place.
The Panthers, with just one senior on this year's team, struggled agains a seasoned Durango team and fell behind 16-3 after one period of action.
Durango's Shiloh Gillen nailed three long-distance 2-pointers to lead the Demons' offense in the opening period.
The Demons stretched their lead by 11 with a 15-4 second quarter to hold a comfortable 31-7 halftime lead.
Following the break, Delta's standings didn't improve, with Durango cashing in on an 11-4 run.
Juniors Emily Nortnik and Megan Sandoval found the range for four points each in a Delta surge that helped the Panthers score 12 points in the period. Delta's defense had several stops to limit the Demons to just six points in the final stanza and a final score of 48-23.
Nortnik was Delta's leading scorer with nine points and Sandoval finished with six.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
