Delta's Panthers are looking to find the groove in their new league but have yet to realize full satisfaction in either girls or boys play so far.
The girls have a 1-0 league mark in the 3A WSL and are 8-3 overall. But both Cedaredge (1-0, 7-3) and Gunnison (1-0, 4-6) are listed above them. The Bruins defeated Delta 42-30 last week (that story is found in the Cedaredge basketball report in today's paper).
Delta was on the road for a Friday test in Telluride with the Panthers scoring a 57-15 win. A Saturday visit to Basalt resulted in an exciting come from behind, 53-45, victory in Delta's first league game of the season.
Delta's boys (0-1, 5-6) are near the bottom of the standings with Cedaredge resting in the cellar at 0-1 and 5-5. The Panthers dealt Cedaredge a 69-58 setback last week and Jon Robinson scored 23 points in Delta's 60-45 win in Telluride. Basalt (1-0, 9-1) handed the visiting Panthers a 64-31 loss on Saturday.
Delta 57, Miners 15
The Panthers were 10 points better than the Miners in first quarter play and were leading 31-10 at halftime.
Delta's defense shut down the Miners' offense allowing just five points in the second half.
Emily Nortnik was Delta's, and the game's, leading scorer with 12 points. Saydee Culver had 11 points, Jenna Sutliff nine and Sara Geddes eight.
Whitney Wells had 10 points to pace Telluride's offense.
Delta 53, Basalt 45
Nicole Alvarado and Cintia Miramontes powered the Longhorns to a 23-10 lead in the first quarter.
Basalt led 33-23 at the break with the Panthers struggling to find solutions for their offense.
The Panthers were challenged by head coach Kyle Crowder to be a better team in the second half. Delta responded with a 30-12 second half to steal a 53-45 victory.
Nortnik finished with 14 points for Delta (1-0, 8-3) while Alvarado was the game's leading scorer with 16 points for Basalt (0-1, 2-9). Miramontes finished with 13.
Delta 60, Miners 45
Telluride had a trio of 3s in the first quarter and held a 16-12 advantage going to the second frame.
With steady scoring from Jon Robinson, the Panthers took a 29-25 halftime lead.
Delta scored 31 points in the second half to win going away. Robinson accounted for 23 of Delta's 60 points and Beau Byers had 10 to give the Panthers two players with double digit scoring. Rye Livermore had 12 points to lead Telluride shooters.
Basalt 64, Delta 31
An ugly start, coupled with a strong inside game for the Longhorns, added up to trouble for Delta's Panthers on Saturday.
Basalt's Michael Glen, one of the state's leading scorers, wreaked havoc with Delta's defense all game long. His 27 points paved the way for a Longhorns' resounding 64-31 win.
Logan Freed had eight points to lead Delta's offense.
The Panthers will appreciate home court advantage for the next three games beginning with Coal Ridge on Jan. 27. Varsity contests are scheduled for 6 and 7:30 p.m.
Delta hosts Olathe on Saturday at 4 and 5:30.
A Feb. 2 game with Aspen is scheduled for 5:30 and 7 p.m. start times.
