Delta High School's basketball teams split varsity games against Battle Mountain's Huskies last Friday night in Edwards.

Delta's girls had to have a last-second score from Emily Nortnik to seal their win, 60-59. Battle Mountain had the mojo in the boys' game and finished with a 63-50 WSL win.

The Panthers won easily, 58-38, in Delta against Battle Mountain. Everyone knew it would be a different story in Edwards.

The Huskies weathered the first quarter well and held a one-point lead going to the second quarter.

Delta took the momentum in the second period and was sparked on offense by Mykayla Music, who had nine points in the period. The Panthers outscored the Huskies, 18-12, in the frame, taking a 32-27 halftime lead.

Battle Mountain was determined not to allow the Panthers to make a big run to start the second half. Instead, it was the Huskies who grabbed the momentum for a 15-10 run that knotted the score at 42-42.

Nortnik's play was huge for Delta as she scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the second half, seven coming in the crucial fourth quarter.

Music finished with 14 points for the Panthers and Saydee Culver contributed nine counters in the win.

Monique Stevens hit four long-range shots from beyond the arc on her way to 22 points for the Huskies.

Delta improves to 4-6 and 7-8 on the year and Battle Mountain is 3-7 and 5-10.

The Panthers hosted Rifle on Feb. 2 and are slated to travel to Steamboat Springs on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. game.

Delta plays Basalt on Feb. 8 at 6 p.m.

Delta's old nemesis, turnovers, reared its ugly head in Edwards. The Panthers played well enough to stay within striking distance but could not get past mistakes when it counted the most.

Od Dath scored seven of Battle Mountain's first 17 points and Delta's Jaspar Carmichael posted eight of Delta's 11 first-quarter points. Both players were high-point producers for their respective teams.

The Panthers lost another three points to Battle Mountain in the second quarter and trailed 34-25 at halftime.

Jonny Ponce's eight third-quarter points helped Delta outscore Battle Mountain by three and close to within seven, 46-39, heading to the fourth quarter.

Beau Byers' six points in the final period weren't enough for the Panthers in a 17-11 run by the Huskies.

Carmichael finished with 17 points for Delta with Ponce adding 12 and Byers another 11.

Devin Huffman had 13 counters to lead Battle Mountain.

The Panthers are off to Steamboat Springs on Saturday for a 4 p.m. contest against the Sailors.

Basalt will venture into Delta on Tuesday, Feb. 9, to test the Panthers in a non-league game beginning at 7:30 p.m.
