Even though Delta's Panthers lost their softball game against Basalt, 6-5, the Panthers own an 11-8 overall record after defeating Aspen in doubleheader action 20-0 and 19-0 this past week.
Delta is third in 3A District 5 standings behind Basalt (11-1 and 15-4) and Cedaredge (10-2 and 14-5) with the regular season play completed. All three teams are headed to post-season play.
In Basalt, Lily Lockhart and Jenna Sutliff hit home runs in a losing cause. The two athletes finished one and two in the WSL and Class 3A ranks as the top two home run hitters.
Lockhart had a pair of home runs in each of the doubleheader games against Aspen to finish the season with 16. Sutliff had nine.
It's official. The Panthers are entering post-season play as the state's number 15 ranked team. In all, the 3A WSL is sending five representatives to regional play.
Strasburg (17-2), the top team in 3A, will host Region 1 with WSLs Meeker (11-8) coming in as the number 16 team and taking on number 17 Limon (11-8) on Saturday. All regional action is under a double-elimination format.
Rocky Ford (18-1) is the number two team and hosts Delta (11-8) and number 18 Fort Lupton (10-9) at 10 a.m. Saturday morning. The winner faces Rocky Ford at 12:15 p.m.
No. 10 Cedaredge (14-5) will play in Region 7 against No. 23 Akron (9-10). The Academy is the seventh seeded, and host team, with its record of 15-4.
No. 8 Basalt (15-4) hosts No. 9 Sterling (10-9) and the 24th seed, Gunnison (3-16).
