Delta's Panthers landed three athletes in the top five at last weekend's Warrior Classic in Grand Junction. Delta's top placer was Kory Mills at 170 with a second-place finish to Meeker's T.J. Shelton in the title bout. Shelton salvaged a 3-1 decision late in the third period to avoid overtime.
Logan Church was defeated in the second round of competition and advanced to the third-place bout of the 285-pound class against Centaurus' Forrest Lalaguna where he won by pinfall.
Luke Anderson also wrestled his way to the third-place bout against Pueblo East's Andrew Lucero where he lost to place fourth.
Mills won his first-round bout against Alamosa's Andrew Sierra by way of a pin in a time of 0:52. In second-round action, Mills decisioned Montrose's John Needham, 5-1, to enter the quarterfinals to face Needham once again for a 6-0 win by decision. In semifinal action, Mills pinned Grand Junction's Seth Latham, 4:46, and earned a shot at the 170-pound title.
Shelton, a three-time state titlist, and Mills, a runner-up in last year's state meet, battled for three periods before Shelton took advantage of Mills on a takedown attempt to score the winning points before the buzzer.
Church's path to the third-place bout began with a pinfall against Alamosa's Preston Duran in 1:56. In the second round Church was knocked out of title contention by Fruita's Clayton Voytilla on a 5-3 decision. The loss sent Church to the third-place bout where he pinned Centaurus' Lalaguna in a time of 3:29.
Luke Anderson started the tournament with a decision, 2-1, over Rocky Mountain's Evan Shell and then pinned Arvada West's Mitchell Romero, 0:24.
Anderson's next opponent was against University's Randon Deets in the quarterfinal where he won a 12-1 major decision to advance to the semifinals.
Andrew Lucero, wrestling for Pueblo East, knocked Anderson out of title contention by way of pin. Anderson and Shell met in the third-place bout for a rematch. This time Shell had the right moves and claimed third place with a 4-2 decision.
Several Delta wrestlers made it past the first round. Drake Horn (138) won his opener against Pueblo Centennial's Carlos Vigil with a pin, 1:48. His second-round foe, Palisade's Austin Bernal, scored a 12-0 major decision to oust Horn.
At 152, Kole Roberts pinned Ed Baez of Coal Ridge in 1:48 to get past the first round. Rocky Mountain's Josh Betts ended Roberts' title bid with a pinfall, 5:17, in the second round.
At 160, Stephen Davignon drew a bye in the first round but fell by pinfall, 1:06, to Olathe's Jacob Jimenez in the second round.
Josh Reeder had a bye in the first round at 195. Zach Gomez added points to Arvada West's team points with a pin, 1:18, over Reeder in round two.
Delta's 220-pounder, Livan Santander, decisioned Alamosa's Manuelito Casilias, 7-6, to advance to the second round. Meeker's Caleb Bradford scored a secondperiod pin in 4:15 to turn back Santander.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
