Delta senior Emily Baier had a monster day with 16 kills against Gunnion on Sept. 15. Baier had 40 attacks and got 16 hits to fall for a .300 hitting percentage agaisnt the Cowboys. The Panthers had to play hard against the Cowboys and managed to win in three sets 25-21, 25-15 and 25-12.
Delta held an 8-2 lead early in the first set only to have the Cowboys rally back for a 16-11 edge after 10 service rotations. Senior Shelbi Ledesma held her service until the score was tied at 16-16.
Baier's service rotation gave the Panthers a 24-20 lead and eventually the winning point came on Gunnison's serve making the final score 25-21.
Second-set play was somewhat easier for the Panthers with Emily Nortnik's nine services producing a 23-12 lead late in set two. Delta went on to win 25-15 and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Nortnik's service in set three led to a 7-3 lead for the Panthers. Harlee Roberts' service was good for a 14-5 lead and Ledesma pushed the lead to 20-10 before the Panthers finished the match with a 25-12 win to win the match 3-0.
Junior Lexi Quinn and senior Dani Sakala chipped in six kills each for the Panthers with Ledesma serving three aces while teammates Baier and Nortnik added two each.
Baier and Sakala finished the match with three blocks each.
The Panthers have an extended amount of time off before their next match with league foe Coal Ridge on Sept. 24. Varsity action is set for 3 p.m.
