Delta High School's softball team faced a brutal schedule its final week of regulation play. The Panthers were in Cortez on Monday (Oct. 2) where they split a doubleheader, losing 12-2 and winning 10-9.

A critical contest against Basalt was played in Delta on Oct. 3 after returning home from Cortez the night before.The Panthers lost that contest 8-7 and ended the week with a doubleheader in Aspen against the Skiers with wins of 15-4 and 20-0 to end regular season play with an 8-4 league and 11-8 overall record.

The Panthers' visit to Cortez was dreary with weather conditions less than optimum.

In game one, Delta was limited to just three hits and two runs offensively while the defense committed seven errors.

Alyssa Trujillo was 1-2 with a double to account for Delta's two runs. Breanna Sprout and Sami Lane had the other hits for the Panthers.

Hanna Molzahn went 3-3 at the plate with two RBIs and Danika Noyes had two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs for Cortez.

Delta's two runs came in the fourth inning while Cortez started with four runs in the first inning and added seven more in the third on its way to the 10-run win.

Lane took the loss for Delta with Noyes earning the win for Cortez.

Game two looked to be a repeat of game one with Cortez scoring four runs in the first inning.

Delta came back in the top of the third to tie the game with a four-run surge. Cortez broke the tie with two runs in the bottom of the inning taking a 6-4 lead to the fourth.

Each team scored once in the fourth.

Delta took a lead in the top of the fifth on a four-run charge. The visiting Panthers added one more run in the sixth for a 10-7 lead with Cortez coming to bat in the bottom of the seventh. A two-run rally by Cortez fell short allowing Delta to earn a split on the day with a 10-9 win.

Hailee Ruble had two hits, including a triple, and finished with two RBIs for the Panthers. Molzahn had three hits for three RBIs for Cortez.

Cortez finished regular season play 6-6 and 8-10-1 overall.

At home against Basalt, the Panthers were hoping to make it a sweep over the Longhorns. Three errors early in the game hindered Delta's chances with six more miscues coming as the game progressed.

Basalt scored four runs in the first inning and kept pressure on the Panthers with two runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Delta scored its first run of the game in the third and added two more in the fifth and four in the bottom of the seventh to come up short in the 8-7 loss.

Trujillo was a bright spot for Delta with a triple in four at bats and an RBI. Ruble collected three RBIs on a double in two hits while Panthers' teammate Keely Porter had three hits and Jenna Sutliff knocked in two runs on two hits.

Basalt had four players with hits with the Longhorn's gaining half their runs off Delta errors.

The Panthers had 12 hits in their 15-4 win in game one against Aspen last Thursday.

The Skiers were leading 3-2 after the first inning but fell behind on the Panthers' six-run rally in the third inning.

Delta added two more runs in the fourth and finished the game on a five-run fifth frame. The Skiers scored their final run in the bottom of the fourth.

Junior Tatum Saddoris paced Delta's offense with four RBIs with Trujillo adding two runs on a 1-4 day. Sutliff had a double and a triple with an RBI and Breanna Sprout had a double and another RBI for the Panthers.

Aspen's Lexi Ferlisi had a home run and three RBIs to lead the Skiers' offense.

Ruble, 8-4, was the winning pitcher for Delta.

Game two took just two innings to complete. Delta scored six runs in the first inning and added 14 more in the second frame to end the game.

Sutliff hit her eighth home run of the season and had three RBIs for the Panthers. Shyanne Steele also had three RBIs, with a double, and scored three times.

Sami Lane (3-2) was the winning pitcher.
