Alamosa's Maroons were in town for last Friday night's 2A Intermountain League football matchup and brought a 1-0 record with them. When they left, the Maroon had a 1-1 league record and had dropped to 3-3 overall following a 28-6 loss to Delta. The Panthers improved to 2-0 and 4-2 keeping pace with Bayfield, a 47-0 winner over Cortez.
Delta had the ball first last Friday evening and had the ball for just three plays before punting it away to the Maroon.
On Alamosa's second play of its first possession, scatback Reis Martinez burst up the middle and cut to his left before racing 75 yards for the game's opening score. Armando Gonzalez's kick was wide leaving the Maroon ahead 6-0 with 9:50 left in the first period.
The Maroon defense stymied Delta's offense on its first possession forcing a punt back to Alamosa.
Delta's defense stiffened to force a punt by Alamosa's Angelo Ramirez. Delta began its third possession from the Maroon 44-yard line.
Ten plays later, Tristan Brown caught Kole Roberts' pass and scooted 16 yards to the end zone to tie the game at 6-6. A.B. Ontiveros' point-after kick gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead with 56.1 left in the opening period.
Defense was the standard of play for the next 12-plus minutes leaving the score at 7-6 as the two teams went to their locker rooms for halftime.
Alamosa had the ball to begin second-half play. The Maroon held the ball for nearly half of the third quarter before being forced to give the ball up after 17 plays and a loss on downs.
Delta's offense began its first drive of the second half from the Panthers' 16-yard line. The Panthers used up the remaining time in the third period with 11 plays on a drive which left the ball at Alamosa's 1-yard line as the third quarter ended.
Runs of 34 and 19 yards from Damon Jensen triggered Delta's drive.
A 7-6 score greeted players as the Panthers put the ball in play from the Maroon one. Brown's 1-yard plunge culminated an 84-yard drive after 10 plays. Ontiveros' kick was good and Delta led 14-6 with 11:55 remaining in the game.
Alamosa's offense stalled on its next possession and Ramirez punted the ball back to Delta. On the punt, Alamosa interferred with a fair catch by Ethan Keller. The ball was placed on the Maroon 44-yard line to begin Delta's next possession.
A 21-yard run from Jensen keyed Delta's offensive drive. A holding penalty on the Panthers set the ball back to Alamosa's 34-yard line and set up Roberts pass to Ontiveros for the touchdown for the final 34 yards. The PAT was good and Delta led 21-6 with 4:45 left in the game.
A Brown interception halted the Maroon's next drive with Delta taking over on its own 30-yard line.
The Panthers covered the 70 yards in just four plays with Ontiveros catching his second touchdown pass for 43 yards with 1:44 left in the game. With the PAT, Delta owned a 28-6 lead.
A final drive by Alamosa was stopped when junior Colton Galvin intercepted Ramirez's pass to end the game. The interception was the third in the fourth quarter for Delta.
