Dana Brock, president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Swaskegame Unit 14 of Kingman, Ariz., travelled to Delta to thank Delta County folk who worked to further the auxiliary's various projects in support of veterans. During April's open sew day at Bold Line Gallery, Brock presented certificates of appreciation to sewers, quilters and helpers for their generous donations of time and talent to make quilts of all sizes and uses (from wheelchair lap quilts to cheery wall hangings to bed-sized quilts) and other useful sewn items.
At the same meeting, the Bold Line group presented over three dozen quilts and a treasure trove of smaller quilted items to Brock to support the many and varied vet programs sponsored by the auxiliary.
Brock explains the auxiliary's mission with great enthusiasm. "We are all about serving our vets -- vets who are wounded, vets in the hospitals for treatment, vets undergoing therapy, homeless vets, vets suffering from PTSD, vets who need spiritual or psychological healing, and veteran families who wait for news. We offer disaster relief to vets. We operate a gift shop where vets can select gifts for family members free of charge. Our creative arts program for vets provides a unique form of therapy and vet self expression as they orient to civilian life. We visit and counsel vets and families while in hospitals, trauma units or in the nursing home. We raise funds for nurse scholarships. We distribute food, quilts, food kits and all sorts of necessities to vets."
The auxiliary's work extends across several states, including Colorado. Bold Line Gallery sponsors a community service sew day the last Thursday of every month (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) where all are invited to come and help with service projects. Just drop in and lend a hand. Sewing experience is helpful but not necessary. This is one way for the community to say "Thank you" to those who place themselves in harm's way for us.
