Delta's big day earns 2nd place

Photo by Wayne Crick Delta's Beau Byers (far right) ran the 300 hurdles for the first time last Saturday at the Cedaredge Invitational. Byers' steps were off and he trailed for much of the race, but a photo finish at the line revealed he had won the race.
Last week's Cedaredge Invitational track meet was a successful one for the Delta Panthers. The boys teams scored 112 points to place second and Cedaredge was first with 148 points.
Beau Byers highlighted Delta's success with three gold medal performances in the 110m high hurdles, 300m hurdles and the triple jump. John Ames earned the Panthers' fourth gold medal in the 3200m run.
Byers began his day with a win in the 110m high hurdles. His winning time was 16.19. Byers ran a 42.62 to win the 300m hurdles and leaped 40-7.75 to win the triple jump.
Ames was steady in his run to the front and posted a 10:53.38 for one of his career-best times.
Tre Johnson had a time of 2:09.11 (800m run) and AB Ontiveros posted a 23.98 in the 200m to earn second place in those events.
Delta scored 24 points on third-place performances. David Mora ran a 12.06 in the 100m dash, and Jacob Wear ran a 52.63 in the 400m dash to earn third place in individual events.
Jason Kaighn, Mora, Ontiveros and Wear combined efforts for a 1:36.68 to place third in the 800m relay and Eh Doh Dtoo, Johnson, Kaighn and Wear were third in the 1600m relay with their time of 3:41.41.
The Panthers earned fourth place points with their time of 47.41 for the 400m relay. Members of the team included Luka Htoo, Kula Moo, Cameron Schaal and Jw Tindall.
Earning fifth place points were Wear (200m), Mark Jones (400m) and Garrison Paniagua in the 1600 and 3200m runs.
Shad Lewis earned a sixth place finish in the 3200m run with Jeff Chadwick, Eh Doh Htoo, Lewis and Ames placing seventh in the 3200m relay. Byers was a seventh-place finisher, as well, in high jump competition.
Three athletes, Mora (200m), Eh Doh Dtoo (400m) and Noah Higgs (long jump) collected points for their eighth place finishes.
The Panthers were scheduled to participate in the Grand Valley Invitational on Tuesday (April 4).
Delta's next meet will be on April 15 in Glenwood Springs beginning at 9 a.m.
