Delta's Church wins silver at state meet

Delta junior heavyweight Logan Church was the top placer for Delta at the Class 3A state wrestling tournament in Denver last weekend. Church was seeded 12th, which is a tough place to be in any wrestling tournament. The No. 12 seed opens the tournament against the No. 5 seed, in Church's case, a senior from Fort Lupton. The winner advances to quarterfinals where he faces the top wrestler in the state, with the winner advancing to the semifinals. In this case, that top wrestler was 39-0 senior, Sam Deseriere, the defending heavyweight state champion from Mullen.

In a tiebreaker, Church pinned Deseriere to move on.

In semifinals, he defeated the No. 4 seed from University, 4-1.

In Saturday night's championship match he went up against the No. 2 seed, Ricky Ayala, a defending state champion at 220 pounds who upset an undefeated senior from Bayfield in quarterfinals.

Ayala defeated Church by a narrow 3-2 decision.

Church was one of two Delta wrestlers to place. Senior Chance Dillingham, who wrestled at 152 pounds, was seeded 11th and dropped to the consolation side of the bracket after losing his opening match by a 5-2 decision.

Dillingham then advanced to the consolation semifinal round on three consecutive wins. He finished sixth after a 6-4 loss to Jefferson.

At 182 pounds, senior Livan Santander finished the tournament with a 2-2 record.

At 170 pounds, sophomore Aiden Barrios finished with one win, and senior 113-pounder Logan Mayberry and junior 160-pounder Drake Horn also qualified for state.
