After 117 years of active participation in the Delta area communities, Garnet Chapter #39, Order of the Eastern Star will close. The charitable organization, the ladies' part of the Masonic Lodge, has been a standard bearer for this community and in Colorado. Once, 100 members participated in local bazaars, food drives, craft shows and parades all in an effort to procure funds to assist in such charities as Delta Doves, Partners, cancer research and regenerative medicine to name a few. Garnet Chapter has also been very generous in providing scholarships to area high school seniors.

As the membership aged, new, younger members were recruited but did not stay for one reason or another. The chapter has been home to numerous state level officers and leaders over the years. Others have served as grand representatives in other states and provinces. At one point, 13 50-year members held offices. One by one they passed away or became unable to serve. At this point, 56 members are on the rolls and about half of those are active. The age and health limitations of those active members have greatly diminished their ability to serve.

In early September, the chapter voted to affiliate with Silver Star Chapter #40 in Montrose. "We are looking forward to this union and hope that we can make one strong chapter, still striving to do charitable work in both communities," shared past grand matron Cindy Wardlaw.

Chapter members gathered for a potluck and to share memories.
