Delta soccer team takes lead in 3A WSL

Two more wins for Delta's soccer team and the Panthers are now the top team in 3A WSL standings at 5-1 and 9-2 overall. Delta outplayed Basalt's Longhorns, 2-1, on Oct. 4 and easily downed Aspen, 6-0, on Oct. 8. Both contests were played on the Cottonwood Fields in North Delta.
Against Basalt, Bradley Davis found the back of the net for Delta's first score in the first half. Marcos Edmondson scored the Panther's second goal later in the half allowing Delta to take a 2-0 lead to the halftime break.
The Longhorns picked up a lone goal from freshman Angel Arce in the second half with senior Edwin Sanchez setting up Arce with an assist.
Delta had 22 shots in the match.
Last Saturday's contest against Aspen produced three goals in each of the two halves of play and resulted in the Panthers' seventh shutout in nine wins for the season.
So far this season Delta has scored 51 goals and has taken 185 shots.
Freshman Martin Corral scored half of Delta's goals in the win over Aspen and brings his season total to 13 goals scored for the Panthers. He has taken 33 shots and has four assists.
Scoring single goals for Delta were juniors Edmondson (10th), Danny Mendoza (seventh) and Brandon Harper (fourth).
The Panthers sent 40 shots toward Aspen's net during the contest, with Corral going three for six to pace the barrage of spheroids goalward. Senior Colton Godwin had seven shots in the game but failed to score, but had a pair of assists for the Panthers.
Senior Joseph Holiman recorded his ninth win of the season against two losses as the Panthers' goal keeper. Holiman has seven shutouts in 2016 while allowing just six goals and recording 48 saves.
Delta played Caprock Academy on Tuesday at the Cottonwood Complex and is slated to face Vail Mountain (fourth in 3A WSL, 3-1 and 7-2) at 4 p.m.
On Delta's schedule of remaining matches is the league's number five team, Roaring Fork (a 2-1 winner over Delta on Sept. 10) and Moffat County (3-2 and 5-5). The Rams are 3-2 and 7-3 so far this season.
