Delta High School's swim team participated in two meets recently. On Jan. 8 the Panthers were in Gunnison for what was to be more than a dual between the Cowboys and Delta. Instead, the two teams went head-to-head, with Gunnison claiming a 95-68 win. Last week Delta took part in the Grand Junction Invitational. Durango won the meet with 539 points and the Panthers scored 225 points to finish sixth.
Host Gunnison won all 11 swimming competitions, with the Panthers placing second in seven events, including the 100 backstroke (Olivia McCrackin), 100 breaststroke (Kendra Hillman), 200 freestyle (Hillman), 200 individual medley (Abigail Vigil), 500 freestyle (Vigil), and three relay teams (200 free, 200 medley and the 400 medley).
Delta had seven third-place finishes at Gunnison. Individual third-place finishes went to Cassie Waters (50 free), McCrackin (100 free), Sami Wollert (100 backstroke), Kaylee Dunham (100 breaststroke) and Landre Whalen in the 200 free and 500 free events.
Fourth-place finishers in Gunnison included Lauryn Metcalf (50 free), Megan Huggett (100 free) Kaitlyn Neely (100 back) Naomi Hayner (100 fly) and Dunham in the 200 individual medley. Delta's 200 free relay team also placed fourth.
Delta swimmers placing fifth included Hunter Blade (50 free), Somer Cannon (100 free), Neely (100 fly), Samantha Lane (100 breast and 200 individual medley) and Waters (200 free).
Hunter Blade was sixth in the 100 backstroke and Wollert was sixth in the 200 individual medley.
Delta's highest finish in the six-team field in Grand Junction was third place. Abigail Vigil recorded a 2:38.23 in the 200 individual medley to earn Delta's highest placing in the meet.
Hillman's fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle and her sixth-place in the 100 breaststroke were the next two highest finishes for the Panthers.
McCrackin finished seventh in the 100 backstroke while the Panthers' 200 medley relay team picked up a seventh-place time in relay competition.
Delta's 200 free relay team placed eighth, with the 400 free relay team placing ninth.
Individuals placing ninth in Grand Junction included Landre Whelan (200 individual medley) and Vigil (500 free).
Whelan (100 fly) and Dunham (100 breast and 200 free) had 10th place finishes for the Panthers.
Delta's next meet will be in Delta on Jan. 22. Teams will begin warming up at 3:30 p.m. with competition set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
