Delta thinclads leave state track to graduate

With chances for more points, and a higher place finish, Delta High School's track teams scratched seven events in order to reach home in time to attend graduation ceremonies Sunday afternoon.

Delta's women scored 10 points during Saturday's competition and placed 23rd in a field of 38 teams. The men tied for 38th with two other teams with three points. in a field of 44 teams.

Delta Women

Lily Lockhart's final season of track wasn't a loss. The senior standout was a respected participant at state track meets as a four-year state qualifier. She won the 4A state shot put title in 2016 and was runner-up her sophomore year. Lockhart placed second in this year's Class 3A shot put competition with a throw of 41-1.25. Lockhart withdrew from the discus competition on Sunday and traveled home on Saturday to give her Valedictorian speech at Delta High School's graduation ceremonies. Lockhart was a sure bet to place with a second-place qualifying throw in Class 3A standings. Lockhart won both the shot put and discus competitions in all her regular season meets this past season.

Delta's 800m sprint medley relay team (Missa Webb, Emily Baier, Kaley St. Peter and Beki Atchley) placed ninth with a time of 1:54.60. The same four runners finished ninth in the 800m relay with a season-best time of 1:49.26.

Other events, and athletes not running in events on Sunday included Emily Baier (triple jump), Emily Nortnik (high jump) and Webb (100m dash).

Delta Men

Delta's three points came on efforts from junior Jacob Wear (800m run) and Beau Byers (110m high hurdles).

Wear finished his 800m run with a team-best eighth place finish in a time of 1:58.93. Byers' 41.49 in the 300m hurdles was good for ninth place.

Delta's 800m relay team finished just out of the points with a 10th-place finish and the 3200m relay team was 11th.

Those Delta men not competing on Sunday included the 1600m relay team, 400m relay team and Byers in the 110 high hurdles (all being potential point-producers).
