There was a change in top-five rankings in 4A WSL standings after last week's volleyball play concluded. Delta's Panthers moved from fourth to second in team standings following their two league wins against Glenwood Springs and Rifle.
A loss by Battle Mountain to Eagle Valley enabled Delta, 10-3 and 19-3, to move ahead of them and placed the Devils, 9-3 and 14-7, ahead of the Huskies, 9-3 and 13-7, for third place. Steamboat Springs is listed atop the standings at 10-2 and 17-3.
Against Glenwood Springs on Tuesday, Oct. 20, the Panthers set the tone for match-play with a dominating 25-9 first-set win. With Delta trailing 2-3, Shanan Davey served up seven straight points, allowing the Panthers to take a 10-3 lead to never be threatened the rest of the way.
In the match, Emily Baier paced Delta's play at the net with 16 kills and one block, and posted 13 digs to help get the Panthers' offense on track.
Ashton Reese was also stellar at the net with her 13 kills for the Panthers. Shelbi Ledesma contributed four kills.
Davey finished the game with two aces and 19 digs.
Emily Nortnik had 31 assists, and Makayla Mills blocked two shots at the net.
In Delta's second match of the week on Thursday, the Panthers were relentless in their offensive attack and began the match with a 25-16 first-set victory over Rifle.
Rifle opened the second set with a nine-point run before losing the service with a 9-1 lead.
Davey served up more of her magic with eight points to get the Panthers back into the set, 9-10.
Delta took a 14-12 lead on Davey's next service and fought off several attempted runs by the Bears to win the second set 25-18.
Set three was a back-and-forth affair, with the Bears holding four-point leads at various points of the set.
Ledesma ignited a six-point run with her service near the midway point, and Delta earned a 20-18 lead that would ultimately hold up for a 25-19 win and the match victory, 3-0.
Reese had the best kill numbers in this contest with 15. Baier finished with 14 kills and a block. Mills and Dani Sakala had two kills each.
Delta will finish regular-season play in Palisade this Thursday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m.
