Delta volleyball team 5-1 since Sept. 28

Delta High School's volleyball team has been playing well the past few weeks and the Panthers' record shows a 5-1 mark since Sept. 28 through last week. Coal Ridge dealt the Panthers a 3-0 loss on Oct. 3 and the last four matches have all been wins.

In the week of Oct. 2 through the 14th, Delta has defeated Aspen (3-1), Basalt (3-1), Cedaredge (3-1) and Moffat County 3-0.

Against Coal Ridge on Oct. 3, the Panthers lost by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 25-22. Lauren Davey paced Delta with six kills while teammates Sara Geddes and Elena Gilliam recorded four kills each.

In Delta's match against Aspen, the Panthers won the first set and the Skiers evened the match with a win in set two. Delta proved to be too strong for Aspen in the next two sets and earned wins of 25-20 and 25-7.

Alexi Quinn had good numbers for the Panthers in the win with 11 kills, three blocks, 10 digs and 24 service receptions. Kat Rodriguez was on fire at the service line for Delta where she dinged the Skiers for eight aces. Rodriguez also shared dig honors (10) with Roberts and had 14 service receptions. Carlson finished the match against Aspen with 32 assists.

This past week's action included a win in Basalt by scores of 25-15, 25-18, 22-25 and 25-16.

Davey and Quinn had 11 and nine kills each while Harlee Roberts paced the dig leaders with 14. Carlson was the top assist producer for Delta with 27 and Roberts and Rodriguez shared top service reception honors with 20 each and Quinn finished with 18.

Cedaredge was in town on Thursday and the two teams treated fans to some exciting volleys. Scores weren't one-sided in the four-set match. The first set was a 25-17 win for the Panthers to mark the biggest margin of victory for either team.

The Bruins led from the start of set two and tied the match at a set apiece with a 25-23 win.

Delta was steady the rest of the way with 25-20 and 25-18 wins in the next two sets.

Davey and Quinn were Delta's kill leaders with 13 and seven respectively. The two standouts also paced the Panthers with aces (Quinn, 5 and Davey, 3).

Roberts had 22 digs with Rodriguez picking up 11 and Quinn 10 digs.

Carlson continued to lead Delta in assists with 32 with Quinn collecting 23 service receptions to lead the Panthers in that department.

Delta's final match of the week was against Moffat County. Delta dominated the night with big wins of 25-10, 25-9 and 25-5.

Kills leaders for the Panthers were Davey (9), Geddes (6) and Elena Gilliam and Quinn with four each.

Davey had the swing and accuracy to contribute eight points from the service line and Roberts added three aces of her own.

Heading down the stretch, Coal Ridge continues to lead the 3A WSL standings (8-0 league and 15-0 overall) with Delta (6-1 and 12-5) second followed by Aspen (6-2 and 10-4), Cedaredge (4-3 and 11-8) and Gunnison (3-3 and 7-3) to complete the top five teams in the league.

Delta's volleyball schedule includes home matches with Grand Valley (Oct. 20) at 6 p.m. and Roaring Fork on Oct. 21 and a 1 p.m. start time for varsity play.

Regular season play concludes next week with the Coal Ridge District Tournament scheduled for Oct. 27-28.
