Delta High School's volleyball team played five games last week, beginning with Central's Warriors on Tuesday, Sept. 8. The Panthers also played twice on both Friday and Saturday as they hosted a volleyball tournament on those two days. Friday's opponents included Gunnison and Pagosa Springs. Saturday's games were against Aspen and Cortez. In each contest, Delta came away with victories.

So far this season, the Panthers have amassed one of their best records in recent years with a mark of 7-0.

Head coach Beth Nelson is very pleased with her team's progress so far this season. "They compliment each other and play in harmony. All of these girls work and play hard in practice."

Delta 3, Central 0

Juniors Ashton Reese and Emily Baier look to be contending for the team's kills leader each week. Ashton, a transfer from Texas, won last week's competition in the team's first match against Central. Reese pounded down 19 kills, and Baier posted 16 for a combined 35 of 39 team kills.

Baier and Shanan Davey shared team honors for digs with 19 each while teammates Shelbi Ledesma and Reese had 11 and 10 digs respectively.

Junior Emily Nortnik took care of all assists for the Panthers with 38 dishes.

Delta's closest set was the first at 25-19. The Panthers wasted little time, and effort, disposing of the Warriors 25-14 in set three. Delta won the third set, and the match, with a 25-17 decision.

Tournament Play
Delta 3, Gunnison 0

The Panthers were the class of the field in Pool A play in Delta. A 3-0 start against the Cowboys on Friday was impressive, with several players contributing big to final results.

Delta scored wins of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-15.

Reese was dominating offensively with 23 kills in 35 attempts for a .457 kill percentage. Baier was the team's next highest contributor with 11 kills.

Baier and Nortnik had four aces each to lead that category while Davey had 12 digs.

Nortnik dished out 32 assists, and Davey and Reese were reception leaders with 20 and 10 respectively.

Delta 3, Pagosa Spgs 0

Delta's opening set was a 25-18 victory. In set two the Panthers cruised to a 25-10 win and claimed the match victory with a 25-14 third set.

Baier and Reese combined for 29 of the 32 kills recorded, with Baier leading the way with 16.

Dani Sakala had three blocks and Reese two while at the net. Digs accolades went to Reese with 13, and Davey added another 10.

Nortnik's 28 assists was the team's top number in that category.

Delta 3, Aspen 0

Delta's dominance continued on Saturday with a 3-0 win over Aspen.

The Panthers gave up 16 points in the first set, 14 in the second and 13 in the third as they coasted to a win.

The match's kill leaders were Baier with nine and Reese with seven.

Twelve service aces were recorded in the match with Davey, Baier and Shelbi Ledesma credited with three each.

Other stat leaders for Delta included Davey with 24 digs and Nortnik with 21 assists.

Delta 3, Cortez 0

Delta's final volleyball match of the weekend was against Cortez.

Baier and Reese were once again to top kills leaders for Delta with 12 and 16 respectively.

Four players recorded double digits in digs, including Davey, 22, Ledesma, 17, Reese, 13, and Nortnik with 10.

Nortnik posted a team-high 33 assists for the match.
