After reaching regionals a year ago, Delta's Panthers lost both games they played and bowed out of the 4A state tournament.

Delta hopes to better the 14-11 mark posted last season.

Beth Nelson and her coaching staff will work diligently to provide a successful atmosphere that will hopefully have the correct ingredients for a post-season berth. This year's assistant coaches for Delta include Lisa Rover, Teresa Baier and Bria Schmalz.

There are 34 athletes currently battling for playing time, with a handful Nelson has her eye on for impact-player status. Junior newcomer Ashton Reese was a starter at her previous high school in Texas before transferring to Delta. She has size and plays at an outside hitter's position.

Emily Baier also plays outside hitter and will be a key factor in the Panthers' success this season. Emily Nortnik will see lots of action as Delta's setter in 2015. Both girls are juniors.

Nelson also touted senior Shanan Davey as a potential impact player at libero.

Delta will be looking for a piece of the playoff action when the regular season is completed. Teams that will also be in the hunt include Battle Mountain, Steamboat Springs, Eagle Valley and Palisade. These teams are viewed as teams to beat in the 4A WSL because they are tough league games, according to Nelson.

The Panthers are also a tough game for league foes, and Nelson is optimistic about how the season will play out. "We are working toward a league title and would like to make it deeper into the playoffs."

Delta was scheduled to participate in scrimmage competition in Montrose today, Wednesday, beginning mid-afternoon.

The Panthers will serve up their first game-competition on Sept. 5 at Gunnison where they will participate in tournament action.
