Delta High School's wrestling team held a 15-point lead over Moffat County after the first day of competition in the 3A Region 4 tournament in Montrose. The Panthers, in fact, led up until the final match of the day between Olathe's Felix Pena and the Panthers' Logan Church in the 285-pound division. Pena controlled Church in the third period of the title bout.
Pena had a 7-4 lead before pinning Church at the 5:35 mark of the contest.
The win by Pena enabled the Pirates to overtake Delta to win the team title, 203.5-198.
Even though the Panthers finished second, they will send nine wrestlers to state this week in Denver. The Pirates are sending eight.
Olathe's first-place finishers include Elias Ramirez-113, Jacob Jimenez-152, Chayden Harris-195 and Pena at 285. Second-place went to Andrew Godfrey at 126.
The Pirates had two third-place finishers, Clay Yarnell-120 and Trent Rose-170. Olathe's Caleb Jolley finished fourth.
The Panthers finished the regionals with two champions, three second-places, one third and two fourth placers.
Delta's two regional champions are 138-pounder Shaun Staats (32-11) and 170-pounder Kory Mills who has a 36-5 record. Staats pinned Bayfield's Taylor Winch (2:42) for the 138-pound title and Mills had to extend his match with Moffat County's Mikinzie Klimper to a sudden victory period and a 6-4 decision.
Luke Anderson (34-10) fell to Grand Valley's Anthony Serna, 4-1, in the 106-pound title match to place second.
At 152, Chance Dillingham (24-9) lost, by pin, (1:12) to Olathe's Jacob Jimenez in the title match.
In Delta's lone third-place match Kole Roberts (32-12) came back through the consolation bracket to score a technical fall, 15-0, over Cortez's Sonny Boren at the 1:54 mark.
Sam Komives (13-19), wrestling at 182, had to come back through wrestlebacks and defeat Colton Castro of Pagosa Springs, 9-5, to earn his fourth-place finish and a trip to state.
Livan Santander (20-15) lost a third-place bid after a loss to Jaden Hinger of Pagosa Springs in the 195-pound division.
The top four in each weight division will enter this week's, Feb. 18-20, state tournament held at the Pepsi Center in Denver.
