This year's Delta High School boys' basketball team will make fans, and coaches, smile a lot. The Panthers will be inexperienced but talented as they continue their season following last week's 3-0 start. Delta defeated Coal Ridge, 56-51, on Thursday to start its 2015-16 season. On Friday the Panthers put together a solid game for a 54-36 decision over Olathe. A come-from-behind win, 48-43, over Cedaredge on Saturday completed Delta's sweep of tournament competition.
Delta 56, Titans 51
A rough start against Coal Ridge left the Panthers behind, 18-10, after one period of action. The Titans scorched the net for four 3-point goals in the opening quarter. Jake Solinger and Hunter Gerber had a 3-pointer and a 2-point goal to pace the Titans' 18-10 start.
Delta freshman Kyle Mock matched the two Titan scorers with five points of his own.
Mock and sophomore Jaspar Carmichael scored seven and four points, respectively, in a 13-11 run by the Panthers who still trailed, 29-23, at halftime.
Delta's offense added new scorers to its arsenal to begin the second half. Carmichael continued to score effectively with five points, while new shooters Jonny Ponce scored five points, and Beau Byers found the range for four points. The Panthers used the added offense to tie the game after a 19-13 run by Delta.
Carmichael sparked a 14-9 run in the final quarter with his trey and three of five from the free-throw line.
The Panthers had nine made shots from beyond the 3-point line with Mock leading the way with four. Carmichael and Ponce had two each and Blake Reiher had the ninth.
Mock was the game's leading scorer with 18 points, followed by teammate Carmichael's 15. Grayson Keener and Gerber finished with 13 points each for the Titans.
Delta's final game of the tournament may be found in the Cedaredge boys' tournament game results on C4.
