Delta High School's volleyball team heads into the final week of regular season play with a three-game tournament schedule to navigate in Coal Ridge this weekend (Oct. 28-29).
First on its schedule is a match against a familiar foe, Glenwood Springs on Oct. 28, at 12 noon. Later in the day the Panthers will face Pagosa Springs at 4 p.m. Tournament play shifts to Saturday with Delta, once again, playing an old nemesis, Battle Mountain at 8 a.m. The final game of the weekend will depend on winners in other matches with Delta's final contest scheduled for 12 noon.
Last week's action saw Delta play well against Grand Valley, on Thursday, Oct. 20, and score a 3-0 victory in 3A WSL play. On Friday the Panthers were in Carbondale to face Roaring Fork where they scored a 3-1 victory.
Delta 3, GV 0
This is one team Delta must consider as a potential threat in the race for post-season play. Even though the records show a 3-0 match win, the set margins were anything but easy wins. Delta won the first set 25-22 then won set two 25-23. The Panthers won the final set 25-22.
Senior Emily Baier was consistent with her play recording 16 kills, two aces and 11 digs.
Senior Shelbi Ledesma recorded 12 digs and Harlee Roberts posted four aces. Emily Nortnik led in assists for the Panthers with 26.
Grand Valley's Tara Ruggles had 15 kills and 23 digs while teammate Bailey Rowe produced 14 kills, three aces and 11 digs.
Delta 3, RF 1
The Rams were wanting to show a strong effort with the season coming to an end and managed to stay close in the first two sets.
Delta won the opener 25-21 with Roaring Fork reversing the score for a 25-21 win in set two.
The Panthers had momentum in the third set and scored a 25-23 win for a 2-1 lead. The final set was, again, all Delta in a 25-11 victory and a 3-1 match win.
Baier's 25 kills, two blocks and 12 digs was a highlight for the Panthers' win. Also having good numbers were Shelby Ledesman with seven kills and 18 digs; Lexi Quinn with five kills and 12 digs; Emily Nortnik with 38 assists and five kills; Harlee Roberts with six aces and 23 digs and Makayla Mills with 16 digs.
The Panthers are sitting atop the 3A WSL Volleyball Standings with their 9-0 league mark and 16-3 over record. Coal Ridge is second at 8-1 and 14-5 and Grand Valley is third with a 6-3 and 12-7 slate for the season.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
