Dinner for cancer survivors cancelled

By Pat Sunderland

Much to the disappointment of organizer Judi Culp, a dinner to honor cancer survivors and their caregivers has been cancelled.

Culp scheduled the dinner for Aug. 27, after the annual Relay For Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, failed to come together. A three-time cancer survivor herself, Culp has participated in the Relay For Life for several years. She hoped to maintain the tradition of honoring and recognizing other survivors which was an important element of Relay For Life.

But Culp has had only a handful of RSVPs for the free dinner. In addition, the regional American Cancer Society office is going through some organizational changes. Culp hopes Relay For Life can be revived for 2017.

She expressed appreciation to the many volunteers who offered to help at the dinner, as well as the Dollar Tree for providing table decorations and tableware. She is grateful to Redeemer Lutheran Church for hosting the event, and to Daveto's, which has served a survivor meal at no charge for a number of years.

"To all survivors -- every day is another birthday for us," she said.

Anyone wishing to assist with Relay For Life 2017 is encouraged to call Culp at 874-2645.
