Kari Kuta and James Goff

College may be five years away for James Goff, but he's already secured his first scholarship of $1,000.

Goff, an eighth grader at Delta Middle School, is a recipient of the Alan D. Laff scholarship, awarded to a student leader in the 9Health Fair in the Classroom fair.

The scholarships are sponsored by generous donations from the Laff family and friends of the 9Health Fair.

Goff was a student at Lincoln Elementary when he helped P.E. teacher Kari Kuta (now retired) organize the health fair. He manned a booth highlighting safety, stressing the use of helmets for classmates when they're biking or skateboarding.

Kuta said Goff was in fifth grade at the time, but could not apply for the scholarship until he was 13 years old. Of the eight recipients, Goff is the youngest.

Goff was recognized by school board members at their July 21 meeting.

Goff was required to submit an essay, maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0 and demonstrate involvement in school, community and extracurricular activities.
