Donald Lee Mitchell died Jan. 20, 2016. He was 78.
He was born Aug. 4, 1937, in Anderson, McDonald County, Mo., to Luther and Naomi (Bailey) Mitchell. His father died of tuberculosis in 1939. His mother married Earl Moss in July 1946 and the family moved to Lamar. Mr. Mitchell graduated from Lamar High School in 1955. He attended Blair Business College as an accounting major and was president of the student council. He worked as an elevator operator at the YWCA.
In November 1956 he began working at First National Bank of Holly and in January 1957 was promoted to be an officer of the bank. In 1962 he began working as an assistant national bank examiner with the Office of the Comptroller of Currency where he assisted in bank examinations in Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah. In 1964 he joined the White Family Banking Group as vice president, where he worked until moving to First National Bank of Salida. While in Salida, he was elected to the Salida board of education.
He married Barbara Watson in 1968. They had three children, Heath, Von and Jodi.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from the University of Colorado School of Banking in 1969. He was class president and a member of the board of trustees.
In November 1972 he joined the Oliver-Moore Banking Group and was elected president of the First National Bank in Strasburg. He was elected to the board of education. After the banking group purchased the Colorado Bank and Trust Company in Delta in 1975, he was elected president. He was also a founding director of Montrose State Bank, and chairman of the Chaffee County Bank in Salida.
In 1985 Mr. Mitchell moved to Cañon City with the Fremont Group as executive vice president of Cañon National Bank. In 1993, he and his wife moved back to Delta where he established a branch office of Western Community Bank of Cedaredge in Delta. He served as senior vice president and senior loan officer for four offices, and as the Delta branch manager. Injuries and health issues caused him to retire in 1995.
Mr. Mitchell held a Colorado broker real estate license, a Colorado multiple-line insurance agent's license and an SEC series 7 and 63 investment broker's license.
He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and Delta United Methodist Church.
He was a past member of Western Colorado Consistory, Al Kaly Shrine and Mon-Ark Shrine club in Salida where he was a president and participated in the Shrine Clown Unit. He enjoyed clowning in many parades.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce where he served two terms as a board member, Delta Elks Lodge #1235 and a 50-plus year member of the Delta Masonic Lodge #62. He received the Delta Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award in 1980.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Barbara; his children, Heath (Michelle) of Barstow, Calif., Von (Marcia) of Cedaredge and Jodi (Sam) Long of Grand Junction and their children Sierra and Keaton Long; a son from a previous marriage, Don (Teresa) Mitchell of Cañon City; two grandsons, Liam and Levi; two brothers, Clyde (Jo Nell) Mitchell of Colorado Springs and Max Moss of Barstow, Calif.; a sister, Erlene Allen of Lamar; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ken Mitchell and Levi Mitchell.
Services were held Monday, Jan. 25, at St. Luke's Episcopal Church.
