The Delta Police Department is proud to announce the promotion of Stephen Furstenfeld and Rdean Young to patrol sergeant, and the hiring of Nicholas Buffington as the newest member of the team.
Sergeant Furstenfeld has been a Colorado resident for 20 years. Sergeant Stephen Furstenfeld has been employed by the Delta Police Department for five years. Previously, Sergeant Furstenfeld owned and operated his own specialty construction business and was also employed by the Texas Department of Corrections for four years. He is a firearms instructor for the Delta Police Department and at the Delta-Montrose Technical College Law Enforcement Academy.
Sergeant Furstenfeld enjoys camping, fly fishing and spending time with his family. Sergeant Furstenfeld also enjoys honing his barbecue skills when the weather is nice.
Sergeant Rdean Young grew up in Utah and Colorado. He attended the University of Utah on a NROTC scholarship and earned a bachelor of science degree in political science. Upon graduation, Sergeant Young entered the U.S. Marine Corps. He was trained as an infantry officer and was assigned as a rifle platoon commander, a light armored reconnaissance platoon commander, a company executive officer, and the assistant training officer for the First Marine Division.
Sergeant Young has 18 years of law enforcement experience and 16 years with Delta Police Department where he has served as a patrolman and detective. He has been designated as a field training officer and has been involved in the training of several patrol officer trainees. The department's lead firearms instructor, he has coordinated and trained all the department's officers in the handling and use of various firearms. Sergeant Young has been a firearms instructor since 2003.
Sergeant Young is a traffic accident reconstructionist with approximately 200 hours of training and instruction. He has reconstructed several traffic accidents involving serious bodily injury or fatalities and is currently on the 7th Judicial District's Critical Incident Investigation Team. Sergeant Young enjoys hunting, fishing and shooting. He is married and lives in Delta.
Officer Nicholas Buffington is a 2010 Delta High School graduate. Officer Buffington joined the U.S. Navy in November 2010 and was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson as a gunner's mate and took part in two West Pac deployments. He was honorably discharged in August 2014 and started the police academy at Delta-Montrose Technical College in September. Officer Buffington was a patrol deputy with the Delta County Sheriff's Office from May 2015 until April 2017.
The officer was raised in Delta and most of his family still resides in Delta. He enjoys hunting, fishing and camping with his family. One main reason for Officer Buffington to join the Delta Police Department is to serve the community in which his family and he were raised and currently live.
