The boys basketball team from Paonia High School saw a little bit of everything last week.
The Eagles fired on all cylinders in a 75-45 win at home against Olathe last Tuesday.
"Effort. That's what I liked," Eagles coach Chase Roeber said. "We hustled up and down the floor from start to finish. We gave it everything we had the whole way through. That's all we can ask. As long as we're trying hard, we're doing good things."
Dagan Rienks won the tip off, Colby Simpson collected his pass and scored a layup on the first play of the game. Simpson came right back with a 3-pointer, Triston Mautz had a bucket and Rienks scored inside and Paonia led 9-0 quickly.
Sean Devlin hit a jumper to put the Eagles ahead 13-2 and they never looked back. Paonia led 20-8 after the first quarter and took a 35-18 lead into halftime.
Paonia did not let down, outscoring the visitors 25-12 in the third frame and then securing the win with 15 more points in the fourth quarter.
The Eagles dynamic duo of Rienks and Simpson were up to its usual tricks and the coach liked what he saw from the rest of the squad.
"We have several other guys that score efficiently, and we've got several guys that are very unselfish," Roeber said. "Slater Podgorny and Colten Godwin are really good passers. Colten sees the floor about as good as anybody we've had come through here.
"That's important because assists are just as important as the guy who finishes the assist," he added. "So we got really good things from everybody offensively. Enoch Kropp and Sean Devlin are shooting the ball really well so we're pretty well rounded, we feel like."
Titans 63, Paonia 60
Paonia slipped to 3-1 on the season after a tough road loss last Friday.
"We know Coal Ridge is a formidable foe," Roeber said. "The last two years we've played they've been really tight games. Two years ago we won on a last second shot, and last year was a really tough game.
"They have players just like ours, really hard-nosed players with grit and good fundamentals," he added. "So it'll be a good game, a good test for us."
Indeed it was another close contest as 3A Coal Ridge took a 19-18 lead after the first quarter and a 46-39 advantage at halftime.
Paonia got back into it after the break, outscoring Coal Ridge 11-5 in the third frame and trailing only by a point going into the fourth quarter.
But the home team secured the win with a 12-10 performance in the final quarter.
Paonia plays Delta to begin the Delta FCNB Tournament scheduled for this Friday and Saturday, Dec. 16-17, then is off for Christmas until Jan. 6.
