Eagles undefeated in three games last week

The Paonia Eagles boys' team added three games to the win column last week to remain undefeated and in first place in 2A District 5 standings.
On Feb. 3 they pulled off a come-from-behind 62-47 home win over Vail Mountain (10-4 overall, 9-3 district). At the end of the first quarter the Gore Rangers led, 16-9. Paonia narrowed the lead to 28-26 by halftime, then came out in the third to outscore its opponents by nine points. Paonia put the game away by scoring 21 points in the final period.
On Friday Paonia topped North Park (5-8, 4-6 1A District 1), 74-47. It ended the week with a 67-34 conference win over West Grand (7-9, 4-5). Its record now stands at 15-2 overall and 10-0 in the 2A Western Slope conference. Paonia is now first in conference standings ahead of Meeker after the Cowboys lost Saturday to Hotchkiss. It faces Meeker at home this Friday starting at 7:30 p.m.
The Eagles' girls remain undefeated for the season following wins at North Park and West Grand.
On Friday Paonia toppled North Park (2-11 overall, 2-2, 1A District 1) in a non-conference 71-26 win. Seniors Mckenna Hartigan, Sophia Anderson, Emily Pieper and Brittany Kendall scored double digits, and Hartigan pulled down a total of nine rebounds.
Paonia held West Grand (12-4, 5-3) to single digit scores in all four quarters to win its conference game at Kremmling, 57-21. Senior Brianna Van Vleet was high scorer with 17 points and shot 3 for 8 from the line. Anderson and Pieper scored 15 and 13 points, respectively.
Paonia ended the week with a 16-0 overall record and 8-0 in 2A/1A Western Slope standings. This Friday the Eagles host rival Meeker. The Cowboys girls are now 10-6, 6-1 and third in district standings. Meeker has three players averaging in double digits in scoring.
During the games the senior class will hold a fundraiser, serving steak dinners from 4:30 until the food is all gone. For $12 diners will get steak, a baked potato, salad, dessert and a drink.
