Earla Jean Bailey-Roy died July 29, 2017, at Delta County Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 78.
Visitation and viewing will be held from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at the Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, at the Grand Junction Municipal Cemetery Veterans Section.
She was born Dec. 5, 1938, in Portales, N.M., to Clifford and Minnie (Dopson) Meador. Her family moved to Hotchkiss in 1946 and she graduated from Hotchkiss High School in 1956. She was voted most athletic her senior year.
In November 1956, she married Clinton Bailey in San Francisco, Calif. He was in the military and they travelled the world for 20 years while raising their four children. After his retirement, they moved to Grand Junction. He died in 1988.
Mrs. Bailey-Roy was an avid bowler and was one of the top women bowlers in Colorado. She created and managed CUTBA, a multi-state bowling tournament.
In 1991, she married Walter Roy of Glenwood Springs. They bought a motor home and travelled throughout the U.S. and Canada in the Senior Bowling Tour. They also started their own pro shop in their garage in Grand Junction, eventually moving the shop to Freeway Bowl. They became managers of the bowling center.
Mrs. Bailey-Roy retired and settled in Eckert in 2009. She enjoyed playing cards and games with family and friends, gardening, sewing and spending time with her dog, Lady.
She is survived by her children, Sister Debra Ann of Brest, France, James (Christy) Showlow of Arizona, Kathy (Peter) Burgess of Denver and Ken Bailey of Cedaredge; her sister, Ida Belle (Marvin) Walden of Eckert; four grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three stepsons, David, Robert and James Roy; and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clint Bailey and Walter Roy; and a sister, Gwendolyn Davies.
