Edward Pete Sunich Jr. of Paonia died Nov. 12, 2017, at Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County after battling stage 4 renal cancer. He was 68.
Mr. Sunich was born Feb. 14, 1949, to Ed and Mary Sunich in Mechanicsburg, Pa. He enjoyed hunting, classic cars, any type of motorcar racing and street racing his '69 Ram Air 4 GTO Judge.
After graduating high school in 1967 he attended electronics school for two years. He served in the Air National Guard from 1967 to 1975 at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del.
He married Gail Strayer on Aug. 1, 1970. The family lived in the Downington, Pa., area for 14 years while working the Penn Central Rail Yard in Paoli, Pa.
In 1984 he was transferred to Morrison-Knudsen Locomotives. He lived in Hornell, N.Y., but traveled the world as an electrical troubleshooter on high speed metro trains.
He enjoyed watching his son play football, baseball and wrestle.
He and his wife separated in August 2009 after 40 years of marriage and Mr. Sunich moved to Paonia to care for his elderly parents.
After being diagnosed with renal cancer in September 2017, he moved to Rock Springs, Wyo., to live with his son and his family.
He is survived by his son, Edward (Cindy) Sunich of Rock Springs, Wyo.; and a granddaughter, Marin Mae Sunich of Rock Springs, Wyo.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Paonia United Methodist Church with James Gall officiating. Interment will follow at the Cedar Hill Cemetery.
