A ceremony commemorating the 16th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks was held in Delta Monday, Sept. 11, at Bill Heddles Recreation Center.
The event was organized and conducted by members of Delta's Lee Marts Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and Auxiliary #3571.
Representing the post and Auxiliary at the event were Dave Rowland, Greg Jackson, Mike and Linda Stahly, Jim and Sandy Baker, Corky and Della Ware and Herb Shipman.
Delta County Sheriff Fred McKee and Undersheriff Mark Taylor also attended along with first responder personnel from the Delta County Ambulance District.
A Colorado blue spruce tree was planted as a remembrance of those who lost their lives in the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The tree was placed near the children's play area on the recreation center's west side.
The ceremony included a prayer of remembrance read by post chaplain Jim Baker and an address by Mike Stahly. He said the tree will stand as a symbol of "why we fight for freedom's cause."
