On Feb. 9, Tony Bohling and his crew from the City of Delta Parks and Recreation Department completed planting 12 new pine trees on the peninsula at Confluence Lake. All 12 trees were donated in memory of Albert Spika, who passed away on Feb. 3.
Legacy is often defined today as something we leave behind for others. Two important legacies in his life were his family and conservation. He was an expert in the implementation of irrigation and water salinity for a nearly four decade career with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Spika was instrumental in the creation of the annual Children's Water Festival which was held at Confluence Lake for all Delta County School District fifth graders to learn about ecology, water conservation and irrigation. His family has donated 12 pine trees to the City of Delta in memory of his love of nature and his passion for making beautiful handcrafted items from wood.
Delta Volunteer Fire Department (DVFD) will be holding its annual fireworks show at Confluence Park on Wednesday, July 4, having received approval from Delta City Council at the council's June 5 meeting.
The DVFD has 28 volunteers and expects to have eight to 10 firefighters from Cedaredge join them this year.
