Aug. 19 was a busy day for one Delta County nonprofit. That was the day Families Plus hosted an annual picnic to help program children and parents celebrate the successes they have enjoyed during the year -- and the children left with some basic school supplies to start their year on a good note.
"The annual picnic is an important event," stated Toni Pearson, business manager. "Many of our families struggle with challenges that would feel like crushing blows to most of us. This picnic provides a positive, fun opportunity to share successes and get energized for the new school year."
Over 100 families and volunteers enjoyed a wonderful barbecue dinner grilled by Families Plus board of directors, a fun photo booth and human foosball donated by Home Depot. Pearson stated that providing basic school supplies supports the organization's mission of enabling the at-risk children of Delta County to grow into educated, healthy and productive adults. By bringing community supporters together with professional counselors and mentors, Families Plus helps ensure each child's needs are met. This includes helping pay sports/extracurricular activities fees, finding tutors as needed, giving rides to appointments and such.
"None of our services could be provided without the help of our wonderful neighbors who donate time and money to us," Pearson stated. "In fact, we would not have had such a successful picnic if we had not had so much help."
Thank you to sponsors Bank of the West, Alpine Bank, City Market, Walmart, Wells Fargo Foundation, Home Depot, Delta United Methodist Church, Austin Baptist Church, Cedaredge Assembly of God, St. Michael's and numerous private donors who all made this year's picnic a huge success.
