Fauniel Jean Barber

Jean Barber died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2017, at the Delta County Memorial Hospital in Delta. She was 92 years of age.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 19, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel in Delta with Pastor Buddy Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Delta City Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Taylor Funeral Service Chapel.

She was born on Nov. 2, 1924, in Wauneta, Neb., to Marshall Warne Stites and Hazel Marie (Huff) Stites. The family moved to Delta, Colo., in 1936. She attended school at Columbine School on Ash Mesa through the eighth grade. She then went to work to help support her family with various domestic jobs during the Great Depression.

On Oct. 1, 1941, Jean married James (Jim) Barber in Sulfur, Okla. After living in Lubbock, Texas, the couple moved to Delta where they were engaged in the plumbing and heating business.

Mrs. Barber was active in her church, the First Assembly of God of Delta, serving in many positions during her 75-year membership. She enjoyed homemaking and was well known for her gourmet cooking and sewing expertise. She and Jim enjoyed traveling. Jean enjoyed her association with the Red Hat Club. With her declining health, Jean entered Willow Tree Nursing Home in December 2015 where she made many new friends.

Jean is survived by her two daughters, Ritta (Russel) Schlappe of Austin, Colo., and Linda (Richard) Valdez of Casper, Wyo.; a brother, John (Agnes) Stites of Cedaredge, Colo.; two sisters, Maryann (Joe) Alexander of Olathe, Colo., and Elsie (David) Fowler of Las Vegas, Nev.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years; a daughter, Carol Lee Wittrock; and a sister, Peggy Williams.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
