At Friday's annual Coal Ridge Invitational track and field meet at New Castle, sophomore Kaiya Firor won the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.85 seconds. Firor also took more than two seconds off of her prior best time to win the 300m hurdles event in 48.16 seconds.
In the 4x200m relay, Firor and teammates Yasmine Gaub, Shay Glaser and Fatima Rodriguez placed second with a time of 1:56. The foursome also took third in the 800m sprint medley relay with a time of 1:56.12.
The 4x400m team of Morgan Miller, Elsie Vasquez, Rodriguez and Tamayo placed sixth with a time of 4:46.21.
In men's competition two of three Hotchkiss relay teams set new season-best times. In the 4x400m relay Zack Allen, Colton Peebles, Gabe Rodriguez and Sam Rodriguez won silver in 3:43.79; and the 4x800m team of Allen, the Rodriguez brothers and Myles Zouette also won silver with a time of 8:50.70. The 4x200m team of Allen, Colton Peebles, Jace Peebles and Sam Rodriquez earned bronze with a time of 1:36.49.
Darrin Young brought home silver in the shot put with a throw of 42 feet, 3.5 inches, and in the discus Nolan Egging placed fifth with a new personal-best mark of 125-6.
Hotchkiss competes this Friday at the Montrose Invitational.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
Several people from the North Fork were present to provide input.
