Hotchkiss sophomore Kaiya Firor's season is off to a good start. At the March 18 Delta Invitational Firor set a new personal best height of 4 feet, 8 inches. Last Saturday, at her home meet, the Hotchkiss Invitational, Firor raised her own personal bar by four inches, clearing 5 feet to win the event. She was the only high jumper to clear the 5-foot mark.
Firor was also the only competitor in the 400-meter dash to run a sub-60 second time, circling the track in 59.68 seconds for the win. The time was more than 5 seconds under her personal record of 1:04.75, which won the 2015 Delta County Middle School track meet.
The Hotchkiss girls scored 39 points. Firor and teammates Yasmine Gaub, Fatima Rodriguez and Jordan Tamayo took silver in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:34.46; Gaub, Rodriguez, Tamayo and Elsie Vasquez finished sixth in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:58.78.
Freshman Shay Glaser finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 54.34 seconds.
Hotchkiss will compete this Saturday at the Cedaredge Invitational.
