Retired U.S. Navy SCPO Kenneth Smith, formerly of Bowie, and his wife, Mary Esther McMurry Smith, formerly of Crawford, will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Dec. 23 in Aurora.
Smith served 20 years in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1963 at various Navy stations and on ships to include the USS Luce DDD 522, which was sunk by Japanese kamikazes on May 4, 1945.
After his discharge, he served as a vice president in the banking industry until his retirement in 2001.
In addition to raising their six children, Mary volunteered as an aide in their schools. She became a clown and entertained children.
They were active in the Methodist church and served as trustees and financial secretary. Mary was treasurer of the Methodist women's society.
