Lifetime North Fork area resident Dale "Gabby" George died Monday, Feb. 1, 2016, at Horizons Health Care Center in Eckert. He was 71.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 4, at Hotchkiss Elks Lodge #1807.

Dale Roy George was born in Hotchkiss July 3, 1944, to Howard and Dorothy Mae (Bishop) George. His grandfather gave him the nickname of "Gabby" when he was just 3 days old. He spent his childhood on Fruitland Mesa in Crawford. He was a member of the last class to graduate from Crawford High School in 1962.

Soon after graduating, he married Anna Hill in Hotchkiss.

Mr. George was a member of Hotchkiss Elks Lodge #1807, the Jaycees, the Division of Wildlife Habitat and the FFA Alumni Association. He received Citizen of the Year awards from both Hotchkiss and Crawford.

He was an auctioneer, a guide and outfitter for many years, a basketball referee for 19 years, and one of the original EMTs who started the North Fork Ambulance where he served for 23-plus years. He was a radio sports broadcaster and often played Santa Claus.

He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, sports and annual family vacations which usually included camping of some sort.

Mr. George is survived by his wife of 53 years, Anna George of Hotchkiss; two daughters, Sandy (Mark) Leger of Hotchkiss and Wendy (Steve) Charlesworth of Grand Junction; a son-in-law, Allen Boyd of Crawford; a brother, Stan (Emma Fay) George of Grand Junction; and five grandchildren, Stephanie Leger, Amanda (Lee) Collins, Sacoria Charlesworth, Cody (Rachel) Charlesworth and Aaron Leger.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Boyd.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Hotchkiss FFA Alumni Association or the North Fork Ambulance Association.
