The members of the Plant & Dig Garden Club kicked off 2016 with a meeting devoted to talking about each member's plans for their gardens during the year, including changes that they wish to implement. Programs for a number of the meetings were also finalized. This sets the tone for the upcoming year with assurance that it will be as successful as last year in furthering our knowledge of gardening, renewing our commitment to community service, and strengthening our bonds of friendship.
Our members were proud to grant a scholarship for Gloria Good who is participating in the current Master Gardening classes sponsored by the Colorado State University Extension Center in Grand Junction. Good has also become a member of our club and we are delighted to have her and the knowledge she will gain from her studies as part of our organization.
We have some interesting and informative programs and visitations scheduled for 2016 as follows:
February: Austin Kaiser as guest speaker with a program pertaining to water resources, operations and water rights, etc.;
March: A presentation by members of the Black Canyon Audubon Society regarding native and migrating bird species for our area, feeding and habitat;
April: Visitation to Delta Parks Department regarding the planning, planting and care of the beautiful pots and islands along Delta's Main Street and park flower beds;
May: Planting of our club's pots at Horizons Care Center;
June: An on-site demonstration of the use of groundcover in our gardens at the home of Joan Chambers;
July: Visitation to Montrose Botanical Gardens and brunch in Montrose;
Aug.: No meeting;
September: Picnic at Cedaredge Park and plant/seed/produce exchange;
October: Program on Garden Art by club member Barb Klein;

Our club meets on the third Friday of the month at 2:00 p.m. All interested persons are invited to join. Our members are dedicated to gaining knowledge about all aspects of gardening, committed to giving back to our community through our scholarship fund, our maintenance of flower beds and grounds at Pioneer Town and participating in the courtyard flower pot program at Horizons Care Center, and, of course, to friendship and caring among the members of our club.
