Garden club savors its herbs

The Plant & Dig Garden Club's meeting for July was all about herbs. Members discussed the ways that we use herbs in cooking, which ones we grow in our individual herb gardens, how we dry them and how much we enjoy having them as part of our personal gardens. Parsley, chives, oregano, rosemary, basil and sage seemed to be among the most popular herbs grown with dill being top of the list for the "picklers" among us.
The new xeric bed at Pioneer Town is planted! It will take some time for it to mature into full glory, but the plants are doing well, and eventually the three spirea bushes, the yuccas, artimesia, Lamb's ear, evening primroses, yarrows and ground cover edgings will add much to the beauty of the grounds. Mission accomplished!
Special thanks once again to Greg Hart for the new watering system, to Benson Bros. Sand & Gravel for donating the trail mix for the foundation cover and to the Surface Creek Historical Society for allowing us to take on this project.
August is our club's designated month to water and deadhead the beautiful large flower pots in the courtyard at Horizons Care Center. It is a privilege to share in this worthwhile project, helping to maintain this peaceful setting for the residents and staff to enjoy. This year marks the 15th anniversary for this project with every garden club in the area helping to make it a success all through the years.
August is usually a month when our club does not meet. But this year we are headed to Grand Mesa for a walk in the woods to view the wildflowers and enjoy a picnic lunch in the fresh air of "Thunder Mountain." This is the first time the members will do this in August. The mountain will be displaying a different set of flowers for us to observe. Should be interesting -- and fun.
