The Hotchkiss Bulldogs increased their overall record to 12-2 Saturday, outscoring Rangely by 31 points in a two-game series at Rangely.
Hotchkiss opened the series with a 17-0 conference win over the Panthers. Mario Espinoza was one for three with three RBIs and Jonathan Gonzalez was three for three in the win. Pitchers Presley Pene and Kale Litzelman faced 21 batters and allowed two hits in 75 total pitches.
About 45 minutes into game the ground shook when Rangely was hit by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake.
The Bulldogs scored five runs in the sixth inning to win game two, 14-0. Chase Hiatt was three for four and Gonzalez was two for four with three RBIs in the win.
Gonzalez faced 18 batters, striking out 10 and allowing one hit in six innings.
Rangely sophomore Tristan Moore had the sole hit for the young Panthers team. Freshman pitcher Dylan LeBleu allowed 10 hits and nine runs and struck out one in 4.2 innings.
With two weeks remaining in the season, Hotchkiss is one of two undefeated teams in 2A District 3/5 play. Meeker (10-5, 2-2) is in third place in district standings, and Ignacio (7-8, 5-5) is fourth in the six-team combined district.
The Bulldogs face the only other undefeated team, rival Paonia, in a two-game series that opens this Thursday at 4 p.m. at Hotchkiss. The series continues at 4 p.m. Friday at Volunteer Park in Paonia.
The Bulldogs will complete the regular season next Tuesday with a doubleheader against Sargent (7-6, 5-1 2A District 1) at Monte Vista before heading into the district tournament scheduled for May 12 and 13 at Cortez.
On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Delta County Board of Commissioners called a special meeting to consider the board's response to the Bureau of Land Management's preliminary Environmental Assessment (EA) concerning the lease parcels proposed for the December BLM sale.
