The Hotchkiss boys earned three silver medals at last Friday's Montrose Invitational track and field meet.
Sam Rodriguez placed second in the 1600-meter run with a new personal-best time of 4 minutes, 45.80 seconds. In shot put, Darrin Young broke his prior personal best effort and held onto fifth place in state 2A rankings with a second-place mark of 45 feet. In high jump, Zack Allen cleared 5-10 to place second.
In the 200m dash, Colton Peebles placed fifth with a personal best time of 23.93.
Young also took seventh in the discus with a throw of 120 feet even, and Nolan Egging placed eighth in discus with a throw of 119-07. The 4x100m relay team finished eighth (48.19), and the 4x400 team placed eighth in 3:46.52.
On the girls' side, Hotchkiss sophomore Kaiya Firor moved to the top of the state rankings in the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 58.54 seconds, setting a new personal record in the process.
The 4x100 team posted a season-best time of 52.35 to place second.
Also earning points was the 4x400 team, placing sixth in 11:11.55; the 4x200 team with a seventh-place time of 1:59.60; and the 800m sprint medley relay team with a seventh-place time of 2:04.09.
Fatima Rodriguez finished eighth in the 100m (13.78), and Ravyn Galbreath placed eighth in the 3200m (16:16.70. Firor also cleared 4 feet, 8 inches to finish sixth in the high jump.
The girls scored 31 points to place eighth at the 16-team meet, and the boys' team placed eighth with 35 points.
The Class 1A/2A, 3A and 4A West Slope League meets will open at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction. Events are held on a rolling schedule, with an approximate schedule available at co.milesplit.com/meets.
