The Hotchkiss Bulldogs placed nine wrestlers and scored 151 points to finish fourth at the Valley Classic wrestling invitational at Center High School. Twenty-seven teams registered for the tournament.
Sergio Campos scored 28 points and pinned three of four opponents to win the 120-pound division. In semifinals Campos (23-2) defeated Nicholas Garcia of Monte Vista in a tiebreaker. In the championship match, Campos, ranked second in Class 2A, won by fall (3:20) over second-ranked Owen Berry of 3A Buena Vista.
Jace Peebles (152) pinned his way to the championship match, and won silver on a 7-2 loss to Centauri's Brian Shawcroft.
Freshman Robert Cochran (113, 18-8), Devin Curtis (195, 23-7) and Nolan Egging (285, 7-9) placed third. At 120, JD Miller was seeded 15th and placed fourth, and Traycer Hall (132), Kevin Chavez (220) and Christian Matus (285) also placed fourth.
On Friday Campos and Presley Pene (126) won by fall in the Bulldogs' 37-27 dual loss against Class 3A Centauri. At 160, Jake Lange picked up a 7-3 win over Centauri's Jayden Gomez.
In their 51-21 loss to top-ranked Rocky Ford, Devin Curtis (195), Kevin Chavez (220), and Jace Peebles (152) picked up six-point wins. Chavez, who is ranked fourth in the state, pinned ninth-ranked Simon Apodaca in 46 seconds for the win. No. 2-ranked Campos defeated fourth-ranked Joziah Maestas by a 7-2 decision.
Hotchkiss remained at No. 6 in state 2A On the Mat rankings. It wraps up the regular season this Saturday at the Norwood Maverick tournament.
